Based on a quick search of ads for typewriters from 1953, it appears to be 10-15% of what you could get a brand new typewriter for in 1953. Although, I imagine he could have gotten a decent used one for a lot closer to the coin operated cost.
In 2021 thats equivalent to $102.00 in change so I would say he spent alot just to write the original script
