This happens to me all the time. Often times when I meet someone new that has any sort of accent, I unconsciously mimic their accent. It can be a little embarrassing, because I’ve found that people usually think I’m making fun of them, when In fact, I’m not even aware that I’m doing it. I can tell you that it definitely comes from a subconscious desire to connect with people.
