In 1929, W. Forssmann performed the first human heart cath on himself. He inserted a catheter into his arm and then walked to the X-ray room to see if it reached his heart. He was fired from the hospital, but later awarded a Nobel Prize in 1956. – WTF Fun Facts

In 1956, rower Vyacheslav Ivanov won the gold medal at the Olympics and accidentally dropped it into Lake Wendouree at the medal ceremony. His diving attempts failed and the medal was never recovered.
